Hand-Crafted Royal Navy Ship's Crests

As current holders of the contract for the supply of ship’s crests to the Ministry of Defence, Wyedean is proud to announce the launch of its new online store selling these plaques commercially to the public.

Ship crests, also known as ship’s plaques or ship’s badges, are allocated to each unit or ship in Her Majesty’s fleet and feature a design specific to each ship. For instance, the famous HMS Dauntless ship crest features a carving of Horatius Cocles (Horatius the One-eyed) who in 509 BC single-handedly defended the Pons Sublicius Bridge on the outskirts of Rome against the Etruscan army. Meanwhile, the HMS Scott ship plaque features a penguin in recognition of the exploits of the famous explorer Robert Falcon Scott.

The ship crests are usually given out as commemorative gifts by each ship’s Captain to visiting dignitaries but also make wonderful keepsakes for retired sailors or Officers of the Royal Navy.

These beautiful ship plaques are handmade in Britain and are made to MoD specifications. The crests are made of resin, allowing it to withstand minor knocks and are hand-painted with the upmost care and attention and then mounted onto a mahogany hardwood backing. Each crest comes in a presentation box, making them ideal to give as gifts.

New designs are added daily to the website and we are constantly increasing our stock. If you are looking for quantities over 10, please contact us direct for a quote.

We would be able to supply HMS Formidable but it would be a minimum order quantity of 10 pieces at £75 each as we would have to prepare the tooling specially for this crest. Please let me know if this is of any interest for you Susannah @ Wyedean

I am a regular force Naval Officer currently assigned administration duties with the Royal Canadian Cea Cadets, namely in the province of Ontario. The unit that I also am required to assist at night is HMCS Oakville, no where can anyone find a plaque of this ship. Thus I'm seeing if your company is in a position to make one(several) to be used for senior Cadets aging out and for various dignitaries and senior officers who visit. I look forward to hopefully hearing a positive reply.

Good afternoon, The Naval Trust have a donated (and rather disordered) stock of original ships badges, including many (or mostly) decommissioned ships. Volunteers clean and repaint these badges to raise money for the Naval Trust's restoration programmes. This morning I had a cursory look through A and B to see if we had any of the badges requested above, and found HMS Ariadne, HMS Bristol, HMS Belfast and HMS Brilliant without too much trouble. I was wondering if your customers above were still seeking the badges, and if you have many other requests for ships badges not in your current stock? We might be able to help? Kind regards, Natasha

Dear Natasha. Thank you for your comment and looking through the previous badges requested. Is it possible for us to take your contact details (phone/e-mail) and for any future enquiries where we do not hold stock, we can refer the enquiry to you to see if you can help? Kind regards Susannah @ Wyedean

Good day. I have an old, heavy standard size HMS Cossack ship's crest made from iron or steel, not aluminium. There is some paint loss to it. I believe the ship was torpedoed and sunk so it is unlikely to have come from the ship itself, and the copies I have seen appear to be made from aluminium. Does anyone at Wyedean have information as to where it might have come from? Thanks, Nigel.

Susannah Walbank:

Dear Nigel, thank you for your e-mail regarding HMS Cossack You are correct the ship was sunk, but unfortunately this is the only information we can offer. May we suggest contacting the National Museum of the Royal Navy – they may have more historical information, www.nmrn.org.uk, or there is a list of references on Wikipedia that may be of help: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Cossack_(F03). Kindest regards Susannah @ Wyedean
